As an essential part of its mandates, the GTZ UDP aims at the development of the human resources in the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment. This cannot be achieved unless by conducting a series of workshops and training sessions that would allow the staff to implement and use the appropriate tools in order to make the urban planning process a successful one.

One essential urban planning tool is the application of the GIS. Thus, a workshop on the applications of the GIS has been conducted in the Directorate of Urban Planning in Damascus. This workshop is the first out of a series of GIS workshops.

The second workshop was conducted in the 10th of August 2008. It concentrated on the use of the ERDAS software which is used in the GIS applications, while the first the workshop concentrated in the concept of the GIS.
